Aerial Silks

At Columbia Aerial Fitness, we offer Aerial Silks classes that are perfect for anyone who wants to experience the incredible sensation of flying through the air. The silks are made up of two long strands of fabric and students learn how to climb and put on wraps.

Silks Level 1  - Footlock Class

  • Perfect for students with no experience or working to build strength

  • Focus on learning footlocks and sequences from the ground

  • Building strength by working on climbing and putting on footlocks in the air!​

  • To advance to Level 2, Students must be able to:​​

    • Classic and Russian Climb and put on aerial footlocks​

    • Do three different sequences without cues from the instructor

    • Enter and hold a hipkey in the air from Russian Climb

  • Attending inversion bootcamp is recommended for students in this level

Silks Level 2 - Foundational Wraps Class​

  • Students begin learning skills from common wraps including hip key, thigh hitch, catchers, and cross back. 

  • This class is aimed at increasing strength and helping students learn a foundation of wrap theory. 

  • Each month, students will explore different entrances, skills, poses, and exits from the same wrap

  • Attending inversion bootcamp is recommended for students in this level. 

  • Students can attend Silks Level 3 if they can:

    • Do a windmill hipkey and know two sequences from this skill,

    • Do thigh hitch and do two sequences from this skill,

    • Understand two entrances and exits from belay wrap

    • Invert in the air with split fabrics and fabrics together​​
       

Silks Level 3 - Advanced Wraps Class

  • Students in this class build on their wrap theory and have demonstrated the ability to independently monitor their wraps and transitions. 

  • Students will learn advanced aerial skills including back balances, front balances, drops, and open wraps. 

  • There is no test out for this class, but skills will continue to progress for advanced students.

Aerial Hammock/Sling

Our studio is equipped with a variety of aerial hammocks (used interchangeably in the industry with aerial sling), which are used for aerial yoga and other aerial circus classes. Aerial hammock is comprised of the same fabric as silks, but it supports your weight and you can sit inside of it.

Sling Level 1

  • Recommended for beginner students

  • Focus on proper engagement in foundational wraps

  • Students will learn sequences and poses from single leg wrap (i.e., half star wrap), star wrap, hip key, single leg roll up, etc. 

  • To move to sling 2,

    • students must be able to do a sequence from each of the above wraps

    • students must be able to do a long arm and short arm hold for 5 seconds

    • students must be able to invert in the bottom of the sling without jumping or throwing their head back​​
       

Sling Level 2

  • Students begin learning longer sequences and more complex wraps

  • Students will also begin learning drops and wrap theory

  • More Focus is placed on pathways, engagement, and wrap theory knowledge.  

  • To move to sling 2.5, students must be able to:

    • pull over mount without jumping from a bent arm hold

    • hold the top of an inversion with good control and stacking from the ground

    • have a straight leg straddle back

    • do a five sequences on the bingo card

    • crochet climb 
       

Sling Level 2.5

  • Students will begin inverting in the air, learning complex wraps, and open wrap sequences

Aerial Hoop/Lyra

At Columbia Aerial Fitness, we offer a variety of aerial hoop classes perfect for any student! The aerial hoop, or lyra, is a metal hoop that is similar to the sling. It will hold your weight! 

​

Lyra Level 1

  • Perfect for beginner students or students who want to strengthen their foundational skills and poses

  • Students will work on learning how to mount the lyra, or how to get inside of it

  • Students will also learn skills, transitions, and poses below and inside of the hoop

  • To move to lyra 2, it is recommended that students be able to invert from the ground to mount the lyra and can get to a top bar knee hang

Lyra Level 2 

  • Students will begin working on inverting to mount the lyra and work towards pull over mounts.

  • Students will begin learning more advanced transitions 

  • Students begin focusing on inverting to the top bar

  • To move to level 3, students must be able to:

    • pull over mount from the ground with a kick

    • get to the top bar and feel comfortable hanging without hands

    • do a short arm hold for 10 seconds

    • do a long arm hold for 10 seconds

    • must be able to do three sequences/skills without cues

Lyra Level 3

  • Not appropriate for a first time aerialist

  • Students begin working on more advanced skills such as inverting to the top bar, working on more advanced spanset skills, and work on meathooks, flares, and beats

Aerial Chains 

Our unique Aerial Chains class, taught by an award-winning aerial chains artist, is a perfect blend between sling and lyra. This apparatus is fairly new and we will be learning many foundational sequences, but advanced students will also learn how to safely explore the chains!
 

All Level Chains

  • Perfect for beginner students and advanced students alike

Trapeze 

At Columbia Aerial Fitness, our dance trapeze classes feature a unique apparatus that combines elements of both a hammock and a hoop. The trapeze consists of a sturdy horizontal bar connected to ropes that are suspended from the ceiling.

Trapeze Level 1

  • Appropriate for beginner students. Students will learn skills on the bar and lower rope skills

  • To move to level 2 student must be able to:

    • do a flower without hands and control it down​

    • pull over mount from the ground (jumping allowed)

    • do a short arm hold for 10 seconds

    • do a long arm hold for 10 seconds

    • do 5 trapeze level one sequences/skills on the bingo card

Trapeze Level 2

  • Appropriate for students with foundational trapeze experience. 

  • Students must be able to demonstrate foundational wraps including catchers, roll ups, corset/cross back, etc. 

  • Students will begin learning dynamic skills such as beats.

Aerial Rope

Aerial rope is a unique apparatus that consists of a single piece of covered rope, allowing practitioners to climb, invert, and create wraps for various skills. While it shares similarities with aerial silks, such as the focus on strength and grace, aerial rope is often considered more physically demanding due to its reliance on body control and technique. 

​

All Levels Rope

  • Not recommended for the first time aerial student

  • Recommended for students who know how to climb silks and put on a footlock in the air! 

Pole

At Columbia Aerial Fitness, we offer two different types of pole classes! 

​

All Levels Pole

  • This is our traditional chrome/bronze pole that is secured to the ground and the ceiling!

  • Perfect for beginner students or advanced students alike.

  • Students will work at their level and perfect advanced skills.
     

All Levels Flying Pole​

  • This is our pole that is hung aerially and does not touch the ground! 

  • Perfect for those wanting to learn tricks on pole with less emphasis on floorwork and groundwork 

  • Students will learn to climb, invert, and do tricks and transitions on the flying pole

  • Since this pole is silicone covered, it is recommended students wear leg covering for class.
